The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative designed to provide support and services to individuals with permanent and significant disabilities.
Launched in 2013, the NDIS aims to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by offering them greater choice and control over the supports they receive. The scheme is intended to provide the necessary funding for reasonable and necessary supports, which can include services related to education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements, and health and well-being.
The NDIS operates on a person-centered approach, ensuring that each participant’s plan is tailored to their individual needs and goals, promoting increased independence and social and economic participation.
To be eligible you must be under 65 years of age, be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities. If you meet these criteria, you can start the application process by contacting the NDIS directly via their website or by calling the NDIS helpline.
The application involves completing an Access Request Form, which includes providing information about your disability and its impact on your daily life. You may also need to supply supporting documentation from your healthcare providers.
Once your application is submitted, the NDIS will assess your eligibility and inform you of the outcome. If approved, you will work with an NDIS planner to develop a personalized plan that outlines the supports and services you need to achieve your goals.
